How to Hygge

Ever wondered how to hygge? Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard of this concept. If you have not, let me assure you that hygge is not the latest dance craze. In fact, hygge is the absolute opposite of craziness; rather, the term is meant to convey the feeling of contentment brought on by a certain level of coziness. Pronounced Hue-gah, this Scandinavian concept of cozy contentment has recently grown wildly popular, with books explaining the art and attainment of hygge and brands selling products under the hygge umbrella. While there is no equivalent word in the English language, it is clear that the concept translates. In practice, hygge is enjoying a cup of tea, or coffee, wearing fuzzy socks, indulging, but not over doing it, taking comfort in those close to you, and finding sanctuary in the small things.

I am not Scandinavian in heritage, but I grew up in Minnesota, which has a strong Scandinavian culture, and the cold weather to match. While the term hygge is new to me, the mindset of finding small joys is not. I’ve always practiced this, and have talked about it on the blog in different ways (see, the People Detox and Dealing with Holiday Blues). I have always thought of hygge practices as more of an introvert thing, since dealing with the world at large can be particularly draining to introverts, and we need small reprieves in order to stay sane. I do believe there is some merit in this idea. Culturally, cold weather climates tend to lean toward introversion, as the cold weather keeps people indoors more, limiting the interactions we might have with others. Coming to peace with solitude may be all that’s keeping you from moving to Hawaii.

While hygge seems to be about both appreciating small joys and connection, the achievement of hygge is really up to the individual. Despite the plethora of books and articles telling you “How to Hygge,” you are the only one who can decide what makes you feel hygge. This month, on the fashion side of the blog, I’ve been sharing what I call cozy couture looks. This is my idea of hygge, wearing something that makes me feel comfortable and cozy, yet which also has an element of couture — it is fashion introvert style.

What do you think of the growing popularity of hygge? Do you hygge? If so, I’d love to hear how you practice this concept. Let me know in the comments below!  And check these links to learn more about hygge.
