It’s Thursday, which means it’s time for Slay The Books Looks Fashion 2017 Look 1 Grown Up Version. On Monday, we highlighted the student archetype of band geek. Today’s look represents the fulfilled potential of the band geek in the form of a music mogul.

All I Do Is Win

What is it that helps a person reach hard-won goals like the music mogul archetype? Most of us are taught that the answer to that question is passion.  In western culture, we’re encouraged to find our passion and make that passion our purpose. From an early age, all the way to adulthood, we’re asked the question: What do you want to do with your life?  Finding one’s passion is the kind of existential problem that must be solved, so much so, that it can become the main goal of our lives. This idea of finding your passion can easily become a substitute for genuine purpose. But what about the people who don’t feel that they’ve found their passion-driven purpose? Inevitably, when passion is elusive, feelings of failure can sap self belief. When others are better, when the competition is stiffer, the climb harder, the goals unattainable, it’s hard not to feel like a failure.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of passion-filled purpose. Yet, while these posts show archetypes that reach their potential, I would never want to preach that the only joy to be found in life is the joy found by those who’ve found their “purpose”.  That belief is just as much of a trap as the belief that says you have to be an extrovert to be happy and successful. And, who hasn’t read the numerous articles about bloggers, writers, and YouTubers detailing how they struggle to make ends meet, despite the size of their audience, and how glamorous their life appears to be from the outside. In these instances, they’ve achieved their goals; they have found a purpose, but instead of satisfaction, all they end up with is a life of fruitless passion.

These cautionary tales cause me to wonder if we put too much importance on finding a passion-driven purpose. It’s human nature to want to enjoy our work and our lives, but the pressure to find a purpose that is driven by passion can cause us to lose sight of reality because reality just doesn’t get the marketing that passion gets. Each of these life states come with challenges, but we’re told to face up to reality, and encouraged to search for passion and purpose. Perhaps if we stopped searching so desperately for them, passion and purpose would find us more easily.

The Truth About Purpose

Our archetypal band geek worked both hard and smart. She reached her goal of becoming a music mogul. Maybe she’s not quite as punk rock as she was in her youth, but passion is only meant to be the thing that ignites purpose.  Once that purpose is embraced, it becomes something that burns on its own, sometimes fiercely, other times, feebly. Further, there is no law that says a purpose is set for life. Purpose can change because it is not purpose that determines who we are, but who we are that helps us to choose, if we wish to do so, a purpose.

About this Look

The music mogul look still shows some of the fun, youthful spirit that was part of the band geek. The ripped sequined jeans are on trend, but with the added surprise of the sequins. Converse sneakers keep it low-key cool, while the military style jacket let’s everyone know you’re at the concert to work.
