Summer is almost over and, so too, are our Slay the Books look editorials. Today’s final student archetype is the teacher’s pet.

During this series, we’ve discussed identities, purpose, and affinities. As this series comes to an end and school starts up again, it’s important to remember that as much pressure as there is on young people to carve out a space for their identity and purpose, a fully realized identity by the age of 18 isn’t where the focus should be. Unfortunately, in the school system, particularly high school, identities are more like a currency. Instead of focusing on living in a constrained identity, focus, especially for those with INTJ cognition styles, should be on identifying affinities. By nurturing and growing these affinities, there will be room to grow into an identity as well as space to find a not just one, but many purposes.

One way for INTJs to ease the pressure of forcing identity is to feed the learning itch. Of course, many INTJs are already excellent students, and may find themselves an inadvertent teacher’s pet, not the suck up kind, but the ever curious and quiet kind. Good teachers can be a great resource for INTJs as they explore identity, affinity, and purpose.
