Hello, Winter Skin: Getting a Holiday Glow

Darling, it’s cold outside, and that means it’s time to think about your winter self-care. Before the winter season gets too hectic, take some time to engage in a bit of TLC now, so that when it’s time for holiday photos, you’ll glow with minimal effort. A few months ago, we did a summer repair spa routine; this spa routine is similar. As always, you can do all the steps, or pick and choose what suits your needs.

Step 1: Drink The Golden Elixir

Golden milk

Start the self-care from the inside out with this anti-inflammatory drink that not only acts as an immunity booster, but also feels like a naughty holiday drink.  The power players are inflammation fighting ginger and turmeric, as well as antioxidant and antibacterial cinnamon and nutmeg. Note, this recipe uses nondairy milk as dairy has hormones that can stimulate acne production. I like to use a blend of cashew and pea milk, but feel free to blend and/or use your favorite nondairy (or dairy) milk of choice.

Directions

2 cups of nondairy milk (I use 1 cup pea milk and 1 cup cashew)

1 teaspoon ground turmeric

1 teaspoon ground ginger

½ tsp ground cinnamon

¼ tsp ground nutmeg

Honey to taste

In a saucepan, heat the milk and the spices over medium heat. Let simmer until small bubbles form on the side of the pan. Stir frequently to distribute the spices. Cook about 5 minutes, until mixture is heated through. Turn off heat and cover with a lid. Allow spices to steep for 10 minutes to let the milk completely infuse with the spices. Pour into a mug and enjoy.

Step 2: The One Secret to Rule Them All

Fermented Rice Water

Rice water, particularly when it’s fermented, has amazing benefits for both your hair and skin. Rice water is essentially the starch drawn from the rice. It’s full of vitamins, which are great for giving your hair a shiny, conditioned look. It also smooths and brightens dull skin. I recently tried it on my curly hair because the hair products I brought with me to Hong Kong just weren’t effective. I was surprised and happy with the results. This led me to try fermented rice water on my skin as well. The great thing about it is that it’s easy and cheap to make, and perfect for a busy holiday season. There are many ways to make rice water, and also many ways to use it. It is the ultimate all-purpose beauty hack.

Directions:

The most efficient way is to do this is when you are going to make a pot of rice. You can also make it especially for your beauty routine.

Rinse rice to remove any dirt. Place rinsed rice into a bowl and cover with water, preferably filtered. Let sit for about 30 minutes. Remove the rice from the water (If you wish, cook your rice as normal). Cover the rice water with plastic wrap and let sit for one to two days at room temperature to allow to ferment. The fermentation process creates pitera, a by-product of fermentation and a powerful anti-ager. Don’t worry about the smell. While the water will produce a slightly sour aroma, the sourness will go away as the water dries in your hair or on your skin.  After fermenting for one to two days, keep your rice water in the refrigerator to stop the fermentation process.

Use:

Hair: After shampooing, use rice water as a rinse on your hair for shiny, more elastic hair. This is perfect for the harsh winter when hair become brittle and more prone to breakage.

Skin: Use as a facial toner for brighter and smoother skin

Body: Similar to a facial toner, you can use on your body for similar smoothing effects.

Step 3: Black Friday is A Foot

Sometimes, it’s best to work on your beauty from the inside out. This clay mask for your feet will work to draw toxins from your body, and get your feet in running condition for black Friday sales. And by that, I mean you can do this while shopping cyber Monday sales because introverts know better than to venture out on black Friday. This works because bentonite has a strong negative charge that bonds to the positive charge of toxins in the body.

Directions

3 TBS bentonite clay

3 TBS apple cider vinegar

3 drops lavender

Mix ingredients in a bowl with nonmetal utensils, as metal alloys will deactivate clay. Apply to feet, and let sit for 20-30 minutes. Rinse with warm water.
