I first saw this recipe from the awesome Urban Bush Babes. I was excited because, one, I had never seen anything like this; and two, I love adzuki beans. Adzuki beans are a common component of East Asian cuisine and are often featured in a variety of desserts, most often as a sweet paste. Having encountered the adzuki bean as a food, I never thought about its benefit as a natural beauty ingredient. It was time for a visit to the pantry. Luckily, I had just enough adzuki beans left over from making my own bean paste to give this face scrub a try.

According to Urban Bush Babes, adzuki bean powder is a great natural exfoliator. The beans contain saponin, which helps to tighten and clean pores. The rough quality of the powder sloughs away dead skin cells, and the saponin absorbs excess oil, and promotes circulation.

Bentonite clay amps up the power of the skin treatment, turning the exfoliater into a scrub/mask with a number of benefits. Bentonite clay is made of aged volcanic ash. Its chemical properties change when exposed to liquid. Through its natural negative electrical charge, it is able to bond to and absorb toxins, metals, and other impurities as these typically have a positive charge.

INTJ Blogger, I’mari Avey Face scrub beauty recipe

Try this great detoxifying scrub mask for yourself.

Ingredients

3 TBSP Adzuki beans (Organic)

1 tsp Bentonite Clay

Enough water/lemon juice/or aloe vera juice to create a paste

*Can be used daily without Bentonite clay; if using clay, only use up to two times a week.

Directions:

Grind the adzuki beans in a coffee grinder or dry blender until the beans are a fine powder. Pour into a small bowl and add the clay. Mix. Store in a small, airtight container.

When you are ready to use the face scrub, mix enough to cover you face in a small bowl (about 1-2 tsp). Add liquid to form a paste. You can use any kind of liquid you want; but for added benefit, try aloe vera juice. Aloe Vera juice is great for skin. Its benefits include moisturizing and healing properties, along with antibacterial, anti-microbial, and astringent qualities, so that it shrinks the appearance of pores. It is also a skin softener that can be used for moisturizing/healing. Lemon juice also provides added benefits. Lemon juice is anti-bacterial, so it’s great to for combating acne. The high concentration of vitamin C means that lemon juice helps with hyper-pigmentation, great if you have dark spots or acne scars.

Add about ½ to 1 tsp (or more) liquid to the powder to make a paste. Apply to wet skin, pressing in gentle, circular motions. Let sit for 3-5 minutes, or rinse immediately if using solely as a facial scrub.

The mask may tingle a bit as it tightens.

Rinse with warm water, and be sure to moisturize to re-hydrate and protect the skin.
