Introvert Life: Spring Staycation

It’s spring and wanderlust is in the air, but a serious case of spring blues can crop up if you don’t have any travel plans of your own. Instead of looking mournfully through your friend’s vacation photos, why not plan your very own stay-at-home, don’t even go to the mall vacation, or “staycation?” Yes, I know that a staycation is typically defined as “a vacation spent in one’s home country rather than abroad, or one spent at home and involving day trips to local attractions,” but when living la vida introvert, getting out and about isn’t the goal. Having a great vacation is, and leaving the house isn’t required (except, perhaps, for a bit of preparation). Want to know how to staycation like an introvert? Read on for some great tips to create your very own drool worthy staycation, introvert style.

Before we get started, it’s important to note that a staycation should feel like a vacation. Remember that to make your staycation feel more special than a typical night in, you need to kick it up a notch and treat yourself.

7 Days of Staycation

I’ve traveled all over the world: Paris, the Caribbean, Tokyo, and London, and almost every state in the U.S., and you know what? No matter how wonderful the trip, getting there is stressful. Travel can also be expensive. There are times when someone suggests another trip, and I’m like you know what, I wanna’ stay home. Home is a lovely word. They know you there. Often, the fridge is stocked with your favorite foods, and you don’t have to wait in line for anything; well, you might, but work with me here. So when spring break, or summer vacation rolls around, why not do the unthinkable, and stay home. Only, don’t just stay home, amp it up. There’s no rule saying that you can’t have just as much fun at home as you can have being out and about. Plus, you’ll come back from your staycation feeling refreshed and relaxed, instead of stressed from airport mania, or hours in the car. The following seven ideas can be mixed and matched, done with friends and or family, or alone. Your choice!

Board Game Night

OK, to do this one, you’ll most likely need a group unless your game of choice is solitaire. Invite friends over or keep it in the family, but to make it a little more than just board game night, up the stakes with a tournament style competition complete with prizes. Have friends each bring a different board game and a snack, then compete it out over all the games to crown the ultimate board game champion. You could also marathon one game doing a best of X number of matches. If you don’t want to set up a tournament, or aren’t into competing, keep it low-key with snacks and your drink of choice. Get some music going in the background and enjoy the night.

Book Club

Round up your friends and get a book club going. Under the constraints of this vacation type scenario, pick one or two books that you could read in the seven-day time span. This is great because even if your friends have travel plans, you can all agree to read the same book and pick a time to talk about it later, or have a digital discussion through e-mail, Skype, or some other app. Of course, you can do the book club solo, and tackle your reading list. Girls’ Night-in

Invite your girl friends over, female family, or enjoy your own company and have a girls’ night in.

There are any number of fun things to do, movie night, conversation club, spa night, or cooking night, to name a few. For a spa night, get the hot water going and drink tea in-between steam facials. Play relaxing music and make your own natural face masks to apply after the steam facial. There is no better time to indulge in some TLC than when on vacation. You can also host a conversation club. Have friends bring topics to discuss or have everyone come up with deep questions. Throw them in a bowl and ask them at random.

Glamping

Also known as glamorous camping, is a great activity to do with friends, or family. And while there are numerous glamping locations across the U.S., when staycation-ing, you glamp in your backyard (if weather permits) or inside (pillow forte style). Glamping is about luxury so go all out with your “tent.” Add lights, fluffy blankets, sparkly pillows, or whatever makes you feel comfortable and luxurious. Putting effort into your creation makes it all the more special. Think of the effort as the cost and time of travel if you were to go somewhere. Then, of course, take Instagram-worthy pics to make your friends wish they had stayed home too! Anyway, once you’ve created your luxurious hang out spot, you can take a moment to breathe in the air and appreciate nature. Use a movie projector to watch a movie, read a book under the stars, roast marshmallows and make s’mores, take a nap, or chat with the people who were lucky enough to be invited on your glamping trip. Do whatever you want, you’re on vacation! Just remember, glamping isn’t complete without some fancy camp food. You can go traditional camp style or indulge in more luxurious food by combining our next idea.

Exotic cooking night

Cure travel jealousy by cooking up an exotic meal for yourself. You can pick a certain country, or take a tour of the globe. By doing this you can still learn and experience another culture without leaving home!

Complex Bake

If savory isn’t your thing, then dedicate a day to doing a complex baking project you haven’t had time for. Focus on the details and create a masterpiece.

Order in night

If you don’t want to go to all the effort of cooking for yourself, or you’ve done that and are now exhausted, order in your from your favorite delivery place and chow down (Bonus points for eating in bed). If you’re willing to get out, you can always order pick up, it’s only cheating a little, but it’s worth it to bring home your ultimate meal, if they don’t deliver.

Netflix and Chill (of course)

Ok, you probably do this on a regular basis, but pick a series to binge watch and don’t feel guilty this time. You can also pick a theme and watch all of one actor’s movies or a certain genre.
