5 Things to Know about Always Uttori

Our one year anniversary celebration is still in full swing, and although I don’t often get too personal on the blog, today I’m sharing 5 things to know about Always Uttori.

Always Uttori was started in 2015

Although we are celebrating our one year anniversary, Always Uttori was actually incorporated in 2015. The original intent was to sell used clothes (I have a lot). After trying an online vendor with little success, I thought it might be easier to go it alone. I spent a summer putting outfits together and posing for photos. At the same time, I was applying to law school (which, if you’ve ever taken that path is a full-time effort). After finding out that I didn’t make it off the waitlist for my last application choice, I found myself faced with a bit of an existential crisis. I could apply to a new set of law schools, further down on the list than I wanted (spending the same $$$ for a less valuable education), or I could pivot. At the time, I just happened to read yet another article about how INTJ females are major tomboys who don’t understand or appreciate fashion, as well as having no idea how to dress themselves (this is only a slight exaggeration of the article I read). Enough was enough. I started blogging in July 2016 about INTJs, fashion, and other lifestyle topics. Some of the earliest fashion looks published on the blog were shot with the intention of selling the clothes, but were repurposed as fashion looks. Now, as we begin our second year, the focus is on continuing to break down the stereotypes that we all encounter about INTJ females. Additionally, Always Uttori has added to this mission. The goal of this blog is to educate, to inspire, and to build a community of INTJs  who seek to be a positive force in the world.

Uttori means enchanted

If you haven’t read the “about” page on this site, you may not know the meaning behind the name Always Uttori. Always is self-explanatory, meaning on a continuing basis. If you don’t speak Japanese, you may not realize that Uttori is a Japanese a mimetic word, meaning it mimics a feeling or emotion. Pronounced oo-toe-ree, Uttori means the feeling of being enchanted, “uttorisuru”, or うっとりする in Japanese. Roughly translated, Always Uttori means always feeling enchanted. I studied the Japanese language for 6 ½ years. Unfortunately, I’ve forgotten a lot of it since I’m no longer using it daily, but I do try to keep up with the language. Why always being enchanted? As someone with INTJ cognition, I feel as though I am always searching to know more and to dig deeper. Learning, growing, and challenging myself gives me the feeling of being enchanted. For most INTJs, life is a journey of learning and self-improvement, which is part of the reason I felt Always Uttori was the perfect name for the blog.

I never wanted to be a writer

Publishing content nearly 5 days a week, it might seem strange that I never wanted to be a writer. I certainly do a lot of writing. The main reason I didn’t want to be a “writer” is because my mom is a writer. As a kid, you never really want to do what your parents do. For me that was being an entrepreneur or a writer; somehow I’ve become both. Interestingly, I’ve found that I enjoy writing and can’t get away from it even if I tried. So, while I never wanted to be a writer, I’m happy that it’s turned out this way.

I love to travel

Ah, the allure of a new city. But, when I say that I love to travel, what I really mean is that I love to tour hotels in different cities. I don’t know why, but once I get to the hotel, I usually don’t want to leave. Hotel touring, that counts as a vacation, right? Just kidding. With a degree in Global Studies, I can’t say that I have no interest in travel. I’ve traveled to almost all 51 states in America, and  have been to 3 of the 7 continents. There are still many places that I want to visit, but I feel I’ve been very lucky to have been able to travel as much as I have.

I am a proud curly girl

Curly hair, don’t care! One of the greatest benefits from writing this blog is the opportunity to meet other curly girls. To be honest, I was not always curly and proud. Dealing with curly hair can be a challenge, so I straightened my hair all throughout high school and college. With the explosion of curly girl videos on YouTube, and the wealth of information now available on-line, I have learned to love my curls. Some days are still hard, but I love my curls and, as I’ve promised to some of the other curly girls that I’ve come to know because of this blog, I will continue to post photos that let the curls fly free.

I hope you enjoyed getting to know a little more about me and the Always Uttori blog. As always, thanks for reading. We couldn’t have made it to a year without you!
