Red White and Fresh Summer Style Look 3 fits the bill for those busy summer days full of errands. I’ve been doing a lot of running around this summer, trying to get things done for the blog before I head back to school in the fall. One errand, which happens to be equal parts work and fun, is to go to the farmers market. I try to go to the Minneapolis Farmers Market a few times each summer, but this summer, I’ve been more consistent. The brightly colored fruits and vegetables, the smell of the herbs, and the variety of growers make going to buy veggies an event, though the crowds are a chore for my introvert heart. Still, it’s a sacrifice worth making for fresher and, for the most part, cheaper produce.

Having recently returned from Hong Kong, I must admit to a bit of disappointment in the selection of fruits and vegetables available here in the upper Midwest. While I know the colder climate in Minnesota is the cause of those limits, it is still a jarring visual when contrasted against the variety available in a tropical region. This contrast is also a very real representation of the power of place, whether that place is geographical, cultural, time, or a combination of the three, a topic often discussed in my Global Studies focus. Don’t get me wrong, Minnesota is home to a proud farming tradition. Many Minnesota farmers were once refugees from South East Asia. These farmers introduced new produce selections to a primarily Scandinavian farming tradition, but it also highlights the limits of buy local, and the farm-to-table movement that is so popular these days. Regions like Minnesota simply do not have the climate, nor the long growing season, to provide the wide variety of fruits and produce available in other areas.

Minnesota to Hong Kong is a very unequal comparison, yet, it’s important to note that Hong Kong relies mostly on imports for food. Hong Kong is close to many other countries, so it’s not hard to find things from Japan, Korea, Australia, Thailand, or the Philippines. The difficult thing is to find anything from Hong Kong, a problem I ran into when trying to buy souvenirs for friends and family. However, because they rely on imports, the variety of food and products available is amazing. In fact, while I can’t say for sure, I don’t think it would be too far of a stretch to say that Hong Kong may be one of the few places in the world with such diversity of choice. So, perhaps it is unfair to look at the limited selections of my farmers market because, while it is limited, much of it was grown in the state. Some of it was grown not far from where I live, and that’s pretty cool.

I will end with this quote by English writer Samuel Johnson, “The use of traveling is to regulate imagination by reality, and instead of thinking how things may be, to see them as they are.”
